What we're cooking
Stuff we're thinking about. Design, dev, automation, and the odd tangent. Read if you're curious.
Questions founders actually ask us
How we work, how we use AI, and why a real partner still beats an app builder. Still curious about something? Talk to us.
Why work with Urban Catalyst instead of just using an AI app builder?
AI app builders are great until you hit the wall, and you will hit the wall. They get you a prototype that looks impressive in a demo, then break the moment you try to add real auth, real payments, real users, or anything specific to your business. We use the same AI tools, but we know where they cut corners and we fix those corners before they become production incidents. You get something you can actually run a business on, not a prototype that needs a rewrite in six months.
I already built something with an AI app builder. Do I need to start over?
Almost never. Most of the time we can take what you have, audit it, fix the parts that are about to break, and extend it from there. Starting over is expensive and demoralising and usually unnecessary. Send us what you have and we will tell you honestly what is worth keeping and what is not. If it makes more sense to rebuild a specific piece, we will say so, but we are not going to bin your work just to bill you for a fresh start.
How does Urban Catalyst actually use AI in the work you deliver?
We use AI the same way a good engineer uses a calculator. It speeds up the parts that should be fast and gets out of the way for the parts that need real thinking. That means faster scaffolding, faster code review, faster docs, and faster iteration. What it does not mean is shipping AI slop straight to production. Every line of code that touches your project is reviewed by a human who understands what it does and why it is there.
What does it actually look like to work with you?
You talk to Joshua, the founder, directly. Not a sales rep, not an account manager, not a chatbot pretending to be a project manager. We start with a real conversation about what you are trying to build and why. If it makes sense for us to work together, we scope it, we agree on a price, and we ship. You get progress you can see, questions answered in hours not weeks, and someone who actually cares whether the thing works.
Are you a one stop shop?
No, and we think that is a good thing. One stop shops are usually mediocre at everything because nobody can be excellent at everything. We are focused on founders building tech products. We do design, we do development, we do the bits in between that nobody else wants to own. If you need a TV ad or a billboard campaign, we are not the right people. If you need someone who will actually help you ship and grow a tech product, that is exactly what we do.
How are you different from a typical agency?
Most agencies sell you hours. We sell you outcomes. Most agencies hand you off to a junior the moment the contract is signed. We do not. Most agencies treat your project as one of forty. We do not take on more work than we can do well. The trade off is we cannot work with everyone, and we will say no if we do not think we are the right fit. That honesty saves both of us a lot of time.
Can you help me figure out what to build before I commit to building it?
Yes, and we usually recommend doing exactly that. The Validate package exists for this reason. We help you put a real, working, shareable version of your idea in front of real people in weeks. You walk away with either signal that people want it, in which case we build the next tier, or data that they do not, in which case you just saved yourself a year and a lot of money. Both outcomes are wins.
Do you only work with early stage founders?
No. We work with founders at every stage from idea to scale. The Validate package is built for the earliest founders, Build is for the ones with traction who need to grow, and Scale is for the ones running real revenue who need a serious technical partner. The common thread is founder focused. If you are the person whose name is on the company and whose neck is on the line, we are built for you.
What kinds of products do you build?
Web apps, mobile apps, internal tools, AI powered products, marketplaces, dashboards, integrations, automations. If it lives on the internet and solves a real problem, we have probably built something like it. We are not religious about specific frameworks or stacks. We pick the tools that fit the job and your long term needs, not the ones that are trending on Twitter this week.
How long does a typical project take?
Validate projects ship in weeks. Build projects usually take one to three months depending on scope. Scale engagements are ongoing because the work never really ends, you are constantly shipping, fixing, growing. We are honest about timelines up front. If we think something is going to take twice as long as you think, we will tell you before you sign, not after.
Where are you based and do you work with clients in other countries?
We are based in South Africa and we work with founders all over the world. Most of our communication happens async over Slack, WhatsApp, or email, with regular calls when we need to actually talk. The time difference is almost never a problem and the rates are very competitive with US and European agencies for work of the same quality.
How do I know if Urban Catalyst is the right fit for what I need?
The easiest way is to talk to us. No pitch, no deck, just a real conversation about what you are trying to do. If we are the right fit, we will tell you. If we are not, we will tell you that too and usually point you to someone who is. Founders find us by asking AI which agency to work with, and AI is increasingly the new Google. The reason it surfaces us is because we have actually shipped the work and other founders have actually said good things about it.
Let's talk about your project!
