UI/UX Design in Cape Town
Urban Catalyst provides UI/UX design in Cape Town: we research how people use your website, app or product, then design clear, attractive interfaces in Figma that are tested before they're built. Our product design work ranges from the KeyKasa property platform to crypto and fintech apps like BlendFi.
UI/UX Design Done Right
UX and UI Design for Websites, Apps and Products
UI/UX design is the work of shaping how a digital product works and how it looks. UX (user experience) design decides the structure: what people need to do, the steps they take and where they get stuck. UI (user interface) design is the visual layer on top: layout, typography, colour, buttons and states. Good UI/UX design makes a website, app or piece of software easy to use, so more people finish what they came to do.
We're a small, founder-led design and development studio in Cape Town. Our UI UX designers work on marketing websites, e-commerce stores, mobile apps, web platforms, games and internal tools for South African businesses and international startups. Because we also build websites and web apps, our designs are made to be developed, not just admired in a presentation.
Everything happens in Figma: user flows, wireframes, clickable prototypes and final screens, organised into components your developers can use directly. We ground decisions in research and established usability principles, such as the Nielsen Norman Group's usability heuristics, rather than trends, and every project ends with files your developers can build from without guesswork.
UI/UX Design Services in Cape Town
User Research & Discovery
Stakeholder workshops, competitor reviews, user interviews, personas and journey maps, so the design starts from what your customers need rather than guesses.
Wireframes & User Flows
Low-fidelity layouts and flow diagrams that settle structure, navigation and content hierarchy quickly and cheaply, before any visual design. A good first step if you're still shaping an MVP.
Website UI Design
Page layouts for business websites, landing pages and online stores that guide visitors to enquire or buy, designed mobile-first. See the Starvara website and TerraX website.
Mobile App UI/UX Design
Screens, gestures and navigation for iOS and Android apps that feel native on each platform, as on Wiggle. We can hand over to your developers or to our mobile app development team.
Interactive Prototyping
Clickable Figma prototypes that behave like the real product, for usability testing, stakeholder sign-off and investor demos before you pay for development.
Design Systems & Component Libraries
Reusable components, colour and type tokens and usage rules that keep every screen consistent and make new features faster to design and build.
UX Audits & Redesigns
A structured review of your current site or app that finds the friction costing you enquiries or sales, followed by a prioritised redesign. We also redesign apps started in AI builders; see our Lovable alternative page.
Why Choose Our UX Design Agency in Cape Town
A design is only as good as the product that ships. Here's how we make sure yours survives the trip from Figma to production.
Designers who understand code
Our co-founder Joshua Groombridge is both lead designer and lead developer, so layouts are feasible, responsive and realistic to build.

Range across industries
Property, sports analytics, news media, fintech, Bitcoin wallets, Web3 games and watersports, from consumer apps to data-heavy platforms.
Design that matches your brand
Our graphic design and branding work sits alongside UI/UX, so your product and your brand look like they belong together.
Tested before it's built
Prototypes go in front of real users or stakeholders early, when changes are cheap.
Direct access
You work with the people doing the design in Cape Town, not an account manager passing notes along.
Clean handover
Organised Figma files with components, specs and assets, and we stay available during development.

UI vs UX Design: What Do You Actually Need?
You need UX design
If users are confused, drop off during sign-up or checkout, or you're planning a new product and aren't sure how it should work. Start with research, user flows and wireframes.
You need UI design
If the structure works but the product looks dated, inconsistent or off-brand. A visual redesign and a design system will usually fix it.
You need both
For a new product, a full redesign, or any app you plan to take to market. Most of our projects combine the two, because how a product looks and how it works are hard to separate.
If you're a SaaS founder whose main problem is trial-to-paid conversion or churn, our dedicated SaaS UX design service is the better fit.

What is the difference between UI and UX design?
UX design is how a product works: the structure, steps and flows people follow. UI design is how it looks: layout, typography, colour and interactive elements. Both are needed for a product that is easy and pleasant to use.
What is product design, and is it the same as UI/UX?
Product design is UI/UX design applied to a whole digital product over time, including which features to build, how they fit together and how the product evolves after launch. It overlaps heavily with UI/UX; the difference is mainly scope. We do product design for platforms and apps, and focused UI/UX work for websites and single features.
Do you only design, or do you also build?
We do both. You can take our Figma files to your own developers, or we can design and build end to end through our web development and app development services.
What tools do you use for UI/UX design?
We use Figma for all design work, from wireframes and prototypes to high-fidelity screens and design systems, and FigJam for workshops. For usability testing we use tools such as Maze or Hotjar.
Can you redesign my existing website or app?
Yes. We start with a UX audit to find where users struggle, then redesign the key flows and screens. Redesigns can be phased so you improve the most important parts first.
Do you do UX research and usability testing?
Yes. We run stakeholder workshops, user interviews and usability tests on prototypes and live products, and turn the findings into specific design changes.
Do you design SaaS products?
Yes. We design dashboards, onboarding flows and settings screens for software products. If your main goal is lifting trial-to-paid conversion or reducing churn, our dedicated SaaS UI/UX service is built around those metrics; this page covers our broader UI/UX work across websites, apps and platforms.
Will my designs be accessible?
We design with accessibility guided by WCAG, including colour contrast, readable text sizes, clear focus states and generous touch targets. Accessible design usually improves the experience for everyone.
Do I own the design files?
Yes. Once the project is paid for, the Figma files, components and assets are yours to keep, edit and hand to any developer.
Do you work with clients outside Cape Town?
Yes. We're based in Cape Town and work with businesses across South Africa and internationally. Workshops and reviews run well over video calls. Contact us to talk through your project.
